The European capital markets ecosystem is expected to contribute to long-term sustainable development. This means that investors should be well equipped to take into consideration other aspects than the purely financial, such as materially relevant environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, in an integrated and transparent manner.
However, the incorporation of these broad and sometimes internally contradicting components as well as the evolving policy framework and industry practice present significant challenges for the actors involved. During this year’s CEPS-ECMI conference hosted by ABN AMRO Clearing in Amsterdam, policy-makers, supervisors, market participants and academics are invited to share their experiences and views on the implementation of the sustainability in financial markets.

Financial market infrastructures (FMIs) sitting between investors and issuers provide trading and post-trading services for which the impact of sustainability can be less obvious. However, many call for a stronger involvement from such facilitators of financial market transactions to promote/discourage (un)sustainable investments. This session will discuss the extent that FMIs and other players can contribute to substantially changing the investment/securities value chain.
